    Responsibilities

    Drives consistency, integrity and engineering quality in the establishment and application of UL product safety certification requirements that are applied by staff located at all UL offices and affiliates. Is a Qualified Reviewer for the assigned standard(s) and has working knowledge of UL safety principles and hazard-based safety engineering (HBSE).

    1. Based on input from Regional Lead Reviewers (RLR) and other sources, drafts, develops to       

        implementation and maintains consistent and technically appropriate certification

        requirements in UL Standards and Outlines of Investigations as well as Certification  

        Requirement Decisions, Practical Application Guidelines (PAGs), Laboratory Procedural

        Guides, Standardized Appendix Pages (SAPs), Follow-up Inspection Instructions (FUIIs) and  

        other standard specific ancillary documents to provide for consistent interpretation and

        application of requirements for UL’s product certification services.
    2. Develops and / or reviews the development of technical content that serves as the basis of  

        training programs for RLRs, Field Services and other UL staff to ensure appropriate and

        consistent application of requirements. Schedules staff meetings and/or teleconferences   

        with RLRs for discussions of technical requirements, procedures, form usage, etc.
    3. Serves as the technical project handler of qualified New or Unusual products. In this role,  

        develops or identifies requirements to address new technical developments or product features.

        Works in conjunction with and utilizes the resources of the PDE Manager, Chief Engineer,

        Research, Legal, and CAS to completely review the New or Unusual product and develop the

        appropriate requirements for certification. Utilizes external resources such as UL’s Electrical

        Council in determining impact on Codes and Standards. Prepares a letter report of findings for

        review by the PDE Manager and distribution to the customer through Commercial   

        Operations.
    4. During the Collaborative Standards Development process (CSDS), works with the responsible  

        Commercial Operations staff to determine the need for and scope of an Industry File Review

        (IFR) as the results of pending standards. Works with the responsible CAS staff to determine

        any necessary equipment and skills needed resulting from the changes to the standard. Also   

        works with CAS to determine the effective date of any needed IFR. In conjunction with  

        Operations, initiates IFRs for UL certified products, ensuring all affected clients are advised of  

        the new requirements. Drafts Important Letter and other file review form correspondence.
    5. Participates in UL/Industry Technical Meetings and UL Council Meetings in the area of  

        expertise as agreed to by Commercial Operations. Provides technical support and makes

        technical presentations.
    6. Assists Commercial Operations in the determination of new business opportunities. Advises   

        Commercial Operations of the technical resources needed to actively participate in new   

        businesses.
    7. Performs other duties as directed.

    Qualifications

    • University degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Technology, or Physics from an ABET accredited program or related field
      plus directly related experience.
    • Detailed knowledge of UL operations and technical vocabulary common to involved
      categories.
    • Working knowledge of appropriate installation codes, standards or guidelines.
    • Working knowledge of UL basic safety principles and HBSE.
    • Working knowledge of involved conformity standards.
    • Demonstrated ability to apply engineering concepts in areas of expertise, including application to complex, new or unusual products. Working knowledge of involved industry issues, needs and problems.
    • Working knowledge of UL’s Conformity Assessment Services, Follow-up Services and
    • Standards development process
    • Ability to perform as a respected technical resource for peers, management and
      constituency.
