    About the Position


    UL is currently seeking a Senior Standards Specialist in Ottawa, Canada to join our growing team!

    In this role, you will be responsible for analyzing, scoping, and executing on standards development activities for assigned standards/Standards Technical Panels(STPs)/Technical Committees (TCs) to accomplish strategic and operational goals. Leverage expertise, experience, and stakeholder network to anticipate issues, recognize patterns, and introduce solutions. Provides leadership for maintenance and evolution of the organization’s accreditation and internal business requirements.

    Our ideal candidate will have a strong background in Project Management, proven ability to multi-task, have excellent written and verbal communication, is well organized, and able to work with a sense of urgency.

    As a Senior Standards Specialist, you will also coordinate delivery of unique standards products and services to customers. When assigned, fulfills the duties of Task Group, STP Chair, or Canada TC Chair. Demonstrated ability to actively serve on and contribute to internal and /or cross-functional teams. Positively represents the department on external activities.

    What You Will Do

    • Uses expertise and knowledge of accreditation and internal business requirements to maximize efficiencies of the standards development process and stakeholder experience.
    • Applies a strategic approach to project and initiative management.
    • Utilizes robust networking techniques to effectively identify and engage key stakeholders and manage stakeholder relations.
    • Actively participates in and contributes to the program management associated with their assigned standards.
    • Provides recommendations and input to Program Managers related to their portfolio of standards.
    • Makes independent decisions based on knowledge and limited information, as appropriate.
    • Employs excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as strong facilitation skills
    • Demonstrates ease in relating effectively to all levels of the organization and negotiating for positive outcomes.
    • Leverages established credibility with internal and external customers to drive for results.
    • Demonstrates a high degree of initiative to contribute to business needs and directives.
    • Takes the initiative to contribute to business needs or directives.
    • Focuses in the area of building and life safety technology, specifically in fire safety and fire protection, and others.
    • Performs other duties as directed




    If you have the below, we would like to hear from you

    • A University degree in Science, Engineering or related discipline.
    • Six years of directly related experience.
    • Project Management Certificate preferred but not required.
    • Demonstrated ability to:
    • Manage multiple projects while maintaining quality, timeliness, reliability, consistency, flexibility, and accountability for all assigned tasks.
    • Apply strategic approach to recognize patterns and anticipating issues
    • Make decisions, take ownership and develop/implement action plans
    • Network and engage stakeholders
    • Proven experience in interpreting, supporting, and executing on board management directives under minimal supervision.
    • Demonstrated proficiencies in common business applications (Word-processing, spreadsheets, presentations)
    • Familiarity with Canadian Standards and Codes, various national, regional and international standardization bodies
    • Knowledge of the conformity assessment industry is an asset..
